Bridgeway receives $750,000 endowment grant

Bridgeway Academy will receive up to $750,000 in endowment funding over the next five years from the Johnson Scholarship Foundation, a U-S based private foundation with the mission of assisting disadvantaged individuals obtain education.

 

Endowment funds will be used to support students with learning disabilities who are in financial need.  Students may use bursary funds to obtain access to Bridgeway’s day school programs, as well as tutoring and social skills programs through its Turning Tides Community Outreach programs. 

 

Bridgeway has committed to raising an additional $1.2 million in endowment funds, bringing the total endowment to $1.95 million in five years.  Bridgeway will raise and distribute another $600,000 in bursaries to families in need over the five year period.

Bill Strickland will be speaking at April conference

 Bill Strickland has been added to the keynote speakers list for our upcoming conference, Emergent Learning: Turning Tides in 21st Century Education.  

 

Bill Strickland is the President and CEO of Manchest Bidwell Corporation, as well as the Manchester Craftmen's Guild and the Bidwell Training Centre.

 

Strickland is nationally recognized as a visionary leader who delivers education and cultural opportunities to students and adults in underpriveleged areas.

Sir Ken Robinson coming to Halifax

Turning Tides Community Outreach and Bridgeway Academy are delighted to be welcoming renown speaker Sir Ken Robinson as the keynote speaker at a new conference, Emergent Learning: Turning Tides in 21st Century Education.  The conference will be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax on April 23-24, 2012.  Registration is now open at the conference website - www.teachingthewaychildrenlearn.com.  

Dancing for our Stars a huge success!

The first annual Dancing for our Stars event, held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Halifax Cunard Centre was a resounding success.  The event was attended by 500 people, who together with our sponsors pledged over $230,000 to support bursaries for students with learning disabilities.  

 

Special thanks to our dancers - Roma Jean Dingwell, Camille Hancock Friesen, Jodi Bartlett, Pete Luckett, Brad Hartlin and Devin Devarennes.  Another huge thank you to our volunteers from DanceSport Atlantic, our celebrity judges, our emcee Nancy Regan and the Bridgeway staff who made the evening such a memorable one.  Stay tuned for details on next year's event!

Executive Director receives honourary degree

 Executive Director Lucinda Low was honoured for her lifetime of dedication to students with learning disabilities by Acadia University in May 2011.

 

The University presented Lucinda with an Honourary Doctorate in Civil Laws at the University's convocation ceremony held on May 16.  

 

Acadia Chancellor Libby Burnham presented Dr. Low with her doctorate in front of graduating students, staff and family members.

Bridgeway announces major conference on learning disabilities

Bridgeway Academy will host the first Atlantic Conference on Learning Disabilities at Mount Saint Vincent University on May 12-13, 2011 at Mount Saint Vincent University.

 

Special guest Danny Glover will share his experiences living with dyslexia in conversation with his friend and fellow actor Felix Justice during a keynote presentation on Friday, May 13.  Local author Sheree Fitch will kick off the conference with a keynote presentation on Thursday, May 12.

Bridgeway Academy receives $5000 donation from Manulife Financial Halifax

Bridgeway Academy has received a donation of $5000 from the staff at Manulife Financial Halifax.  Our school was chosen as one of three charities to receive an annual gift from the organization this Christmas season.
